Pomegranates & Jugs

Why pomegranates? I started sculpting these little fruits when there was a leftover chunk of clay after weighing out clay for throwing . It is satisfying to loosely sculpt a shape with your your hands after spending hours on the pottery wheel. During open days in the studio people often asked if they were for sale. So I began making a batch every so often, which also means I have small items to tuck into any gaps in the kiln.

Since making them in various sizes, glaze combinations they have become quite popular. They have an interesting and wide cultural and religious symbolism too including fertility, beauty and eternal life. The images below show a big batch of Pomegranates that I have just finished making, finished simply in my off white glaze. With a small opening through the centre they can be used for a single stem of foliage or dried flower.

Alongside these I have been making simple little handleless jugs which are around 250ml capacity and perfect to serve milk, cream or sauce at the table. The first batch have been glazed in my favourite oatmeal colour and the next batch might have a hand painted motif in cobalt or light blue. These are available in the studio and might make it onto the website.
